What we do

Our vision

Students should have access to the richest and most complete array of educational experiences. These experiences have the twin goals of fostering analytical, critical thinking; and of creating skills, both cognitive and physical. The journey toward these particular goals underpins the lifelong learning experience which in turn leads to a more richly fulfilling life.

Our mission

LHMI provides an education in both music and broader academic skills, the latter with a special emphasis on high-order written expression. Instruction occurs one-on-one or in very small groups, so that the focus is always on the individual learner, rather than on some 'generalized student.' Students cultivate deep thinking and develop increasingly-successful artistic experiences (in music or in academic areas) as they learn in an environment that is both challenging and nurturing.

Our philosophy

Excellence and Nurture. The expressive arts of music and language are rooted in auditory learning, based on a consistent flow of accurate models coupled with thoughtful, intentional imitation. Listening is key in both experiences. For music, it is highly recommended that sessions be recorded (any sort of appropriate device is acceptable), and review of the recording affords the student and home coach the opportunity to 'take the lesson' home in its entirety. Shinichi Suzuki's pioneering work is the basis, augmented by strong pedagogy and technical competence through the Russian skill regimen.
